This area of the park produced the silver coin and the wheat penny. Once again we ran in to Metal Detector Bicycle Dude. We swapped a few more stories. We must have chatted for 20 minutes.
Metal Detecting FAT Silver – www.metaldetectorX.com – This is likely the biggest chunk of silver I have found to date. I don’t have a scale, but it feels heavier than a silver half dollar. Turns out it is (was) an expensive antique. ARTICLE QUOTE ” This is a large brooch of a gracefully trotting horse with a small bezel-set turquoise for the eye and carriage complete with a movable wheel. It is a old piece of Mexican jewelry craftsmanship whose charm is in the anatomically accurate articulation of the fluid lines of the horse and carriage. This particular piece was probably made somewhere between 1915 and 1930′s. The hallmark reads, “Silver Made In Mexico”. I was told that it is at least 980 silver, and it does test at least 925. This was made by a Mexican artist either before or in the early days of Taxco when it was the center of the universe of the finest silver artisans and jewelry, and was sought by individual collectors, as well as fine retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Gumps, and Coro. William Spratling was responsible for inaugurating the concept of the silver taller where many artisans designed and produced exquisite silver pieces under one roof. Spratling began by employing a few craftsmen in his home, which grew to later become Taller de Las Delicias. He eventually had 100 artisans working for him, and spawned an entire cottage industry that set a higher standard for perfection in silver design and craftsmanship for years to come. The brooch is in extremely fine …
