We visit the site of former ‘Coal King’ and Parliamentarian Lewis Thomas’ mansion which was constructed in 1888 and demolished in 1937. The mansion had three stories, its own electrical power generating plant, 49 rooms and it even incorporated an hydraulic lift (elevator), quite a rarity in an 1880s Australian country house! The house was serviced by a permanent staff of eight and was the focus of social activity for the large Welsh mining community who came to Australia to work the coal deposits in the area. Unfortunately, following the death of Mrs Ann Thomas in 1930 with no living heirs, the mansion was sold to a coal mining company in 1936. A series of subsidence events under the foundation in the old coal workings finally spelt the end for the structure and it was demolished in 1937. We hope you enjoy this historical outing and a bit of investigative bush archaeology. Thanks for watching and please take the time to visit our blog www.nqexplorers.com

adventureswithjim.com presents SHIPWRECK SUNDAY. Well, it was a sunday when this relic hunt started at least! Lots of great metal detecting on the beach, if you don’t mind the occasional 20 ton shrip wreck relic. Got some tourist gold too, and that’s never a bad thing. Maybe the opening anamation reveals a bit too much about my age and state of sanity, but this is kind of normal for my demented treasure hunting mind. Music by Kevin Macleod.

Joseph Buffalo asked:

To find the old locations, research is the key. If you haven’t resided in the area very long, look for some folks who have. There are many locations where fairs and carnivals set up which are no longer there.

Also at the current locations, right after the carnival packs up and leaves is good for coin and jewelry hunting.

[phpbay]antique gold, 2, “”, “”[/phpbay]
The one area I was always happy to locate was the penny-pitching site. On one occasion we researched and found a location where the carnival used to set up some 30-40 years ago. The lot was still vacant. We talked to some older neighbors that lived in the area and asked them if they ever went to the event. Did they remember were some of the money pitching sites were located? If we had a site to search we would square off an area with rope or string, so we would do a “grid” search.

Locate where the Ferris wheel was set up. You could get lucky and find coins and possibly a ring or bracelet.

Remember, adults love to get on the rides too. You know the roller coasters, the ones that turn upside down? I never like those darn things, but you can find some great items under them.

I love the fairs where the audience stands are set up with sawdust under them. When items fall into the sawdust, they are usually lost, until you come along with your trusty metal detector. Happy treasure hunting.

Found over $300 worth of Gold in a city park. Read all about it at AZMULETREASURES

Website content
