We visit the site of former ‘Coal King’ and Parliamentarian Lewis Thomas’ mansion which was constructed in 1888 and demolished in 1937. The mansion had three stories, its own electrical power generating plant, 49 rooms and it even incorporated an hydraulic lift (elevator), quite a rarity in an 1880s Australian country house! The house was serviced by a permanent staff of eight and was the focus of social activity for the large Welsh mining community who came to Australia to work the coal deposits in the area. Unfortunately, following the death of Mrs Ann Thomas in 1930 with no living heirs, the mansion was sold to a coal mining company in 1936. A series of subsidence events under the foundation in the old coal workings finally spelt the end for the structure and it was demolished in 1937. We hope you enjoy this historical outing and a bit of investigative bush archaeology. Thanks for watching and please take the time to visit our blog www.nqexplorers.com

A metal detecting video that exposes the relationships between Kellyco and metal detecting forums such as findmall and treasurenet. These forums have developed a very loyal relationship with Kellyco, not you or their very own members. Scheme number one at that place is the “Titan” brand of detectors they sell at inflated prices. Do a little research and compare the price of a Radioshack Discovery 2200 here… www.radioshack.com versus their identical but with a different name and faceplate machine here….. www.kellycodetectors.com This is just a small sample of what the admins over at these forums will cover up in order to keep steering people towards their sponsor. They will censor your posts, remove them, rewrite them, whatever it takes to prevent truthful facts and good advice from being handed out.

Day one of my latest project, plan find the town, tick accomplished that, now figure out the town, well i now have a map, pity i did not have that before i went this time. but found a 1951 penny in the tennis court sitting area their. i now know their was 74 homes in the town, 1 hotel, a sports club, a church, a railway station. still guessing it must have had a shop/post office being such a large town. its been gone now for a few decades, reduced to weeds and dust. so this video is a good quick tour of half the town, stay tuned for day two video, it will focus on the hotel ruins and railway station if i find the station, its in thick high grassland.

This is our return hunt to the site of an 1883 Sugar Mill. We add to our finds from the predecimal ‘coin patch’, unearthing a lovely silver Sixpence and further predecimal Pennys and Halfpennys. With the total from the site now at 45 coins, rain (and long grass), finally stopped play. In addition to the coins we unearth an engineer’s steel ruler to go with the protractor/compass from the last hunt, and some more sterling silver tableware. The Mill Engineer obviously dined in style. Thanks for watching and please take the time to visit our blog www.nqexplorers.com

We visit the site of the parachute packing sheds of the US Army’s 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, who were deployed in North Queensland during 1942/43. Featured finds over the two-day hunt include a beautiful 1947 Silver Florin (Two Shilling) coin, and a US Army M-1936 pattern webbing buckle. Some 3500 men of the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, including the 501st Parachute Battalion and ‘A’ Company of the 504th Parachute Infantry Battalion, arrived in North Queensland in December 1942. After completion of training the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment embarked in August 1943, bound for Port Moresby. On the morning of 5 September the paratroopers were loaded into 82 C-47 transport aircraft assembled at eight airstrips in the Port Moresby area. Five aircraft carrying Australian gunners from the 2/4 Field Regiment accompanied the air armada over the Owen Stanley Range for the parachute assault on Japanese forces around Nadzab in the Markham River valley. They secured the Nadzab area for the construction of an airstrip from where the Australian 7th Division could be flown in to attack Lae from the landward side, while the 9th Division carried out an assault from the sea. Lae and Salamaua were taken by mid-September. Thanks for watching and please take the time to visit our blog www.nqexplorers.com

Our search for industrial relics at the site of a Sugar Mill which operated from 1883 until 1991 leads us to a ‘coin patch’ of 39 predecimal Pennys and Halfpennys. Perhaps this was the ‘Two-up School’ where the mill workers spent their lunch breaks? We will be going back soon as there are several acres to hunt. This video has been heavily edited from over 26 minutes to it’s published length. We apologize for any lack of continuity.
